DM Training Program Overview

Dungeon Monitors (DMs, sometimes referred to as Play/Safety Monitors) are like the lifeguards of the kink world. There aren't enough of them! Many parties rely on these generous volunteers for:

  • safety monitoring and First Aid for most medical emergencies
  • traffic control
  • knowing where to find things
  • conflict management
  • answering questions and
  • serving as an embassador to the play party
As time passes, new DMs must step in to replace those who have stopped volunteering over time, or there is a lack of qualified people to volunteer, which hurts not just that party, but others too. Many DMs volunteer at more than one party. There are many training workshops, but they fall short of being a full training program.

We have created a DM Training Program to help fill that gap. The Program consists of four pieces (details below):

  1. DM Training Workshop - Presented each Fall and Spring. Next one is September 6th. (see our Workshops page for more info)
  2. First Aid/CPR Certification for the kinky minded - Next one is September 26/27. (more info)
  3. Shadowing - Three shifts alongside an experienced DM
  4. Mentoring - Having an experienced DM to contact anytime to ask questions

Dungeon Monitor Training Workshop
Part of BENT's DM Training Program
Presented by Dana (host of BENT) and Lady Viktoria (BENT's Chief DM)

Saturday, September 6th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
$40 registration fee includes a personal DM safety kit
Workshop participants must register in advance at bent.signup@gmail.com

Dana and Viktoria will teach you the DM basics through lecture, hands on training, group exercises and our play monitor's manual, The Black Rose Safety Monitor's Training Guide.

The Play/Safety Monitor MISSION is to ensure a safe, enjoyable, legal Play Area. In practical terms, this means ensuring that the house rules are enforced, that illegal activity is not allowed, and unsafe or high risk SM activities are monitored closely and stopped if they appear to pose a risk to the well being or confidentiality of any attendees. This should be accomplished while interfering with play as little as possible. You will be expected to perform the following roles: lifeguard, guide, law enforcement, crowd control, and medical first responder. - The Black Rose Safety Monitor's Training Guide

Standard First Aid Level "C" certification for the kinky minded

Presented by Lady Viktoria, BENT's Chief DM (Taught by a kink-aware trainer!)
Lady Viktoria is a sex educator. You can see more details of her workshops at attitudes.cc

A two day St John Ambulance course that covers the skills needed to recognize and provide intervention for life-threatening emergencies until medical help arrives.

This course incorporates the maximum level of cardiopulmonary respiration (CPR) training. This is an Occupational Health & Safety approved course that covers the following topics:

  • emergency scene management - shock
  • adult, child & infant CPR & choking management
  • 2 rescuer CPR - bleeding - medical condition
  • wound care - hot and cold injuries
  • head and spinal injuries - eye injuries - burns
  • bone and joint injuries - secondary survey

Shadowing

Newly trained DMs will have three opportunities to work alongside an experienced DM. This gives the DM-in-Training an opportunity to see what a DM does at the play party without having to commit to volunteering to be on a shift without any experience. Each DM-in-Training will be offered to shadow at BENT, Fetish4Play and other play parties in need of DMs.

Mentoring

As soon as the DM workshop is completed, an experienced DM is selected to act as a mentor (or buddy) to each DM-in-Training. The mentor will be available to the DM-in-Training to answer questions, run scenarios or shadow at any time, not just at kink events, since questions aren't always confined to being in a play context.

If you are willing to act as a DM Mentor, please contact us!

We welcome your questions or feedback as this Program evolves.
